i'm having a bit
of a scarf moment here. oh sure, it's 93 degrees, and i'm sweating consistently throughout the day.
but i'm dreaming of a slightly cooler climate, where a wonderful print or some bright colors around the neck adds the perfect touch to an otherwise simple outfit.

this book by Nicky Albrechtsen and Fola Solanke - "the definitive work on scarves in the 20th century" - looks like it might be a necessary addition to my slowly growing scarf collection (mostly vera at this point, with a beautiful multi-hued pink oscar de la renta thanks to the lovely laurie).
Published by Thames & Hudson, see more info on the book here.

stay tuned.
in the meantime, some silliness:

"This, partly, is what Chekhov means by real life: he means real mental life, with its wrong turnings and cul-de-sacs and random, intimately treasured banalities."

think it's
just going to be that kind of week.
that kind of sweet-picture-(with some some good words) week, with little to no focus on clothes or accessories or homegoods.

great article
(albeit an old one) by critic james wood on the recent "genre" of books by authors such as zadie smith, david foster wallace, salman rushdie, etc.
"Human, All Too Inhuman"
i agree with every single one of the points that wood makes in this review.

thoughts?
i'm looking for a classic (but not stuffy) bag that i can wear to work.
requirements:
large.
able to be carried over the shoulder.
camel/tan colored.
not too many details, but enough to keep things interesting.

so far i've found the one above, although i don't know if i love love love it. it's also from ivanka trump's line, which gives me considerable pause - i shudder to think that my money would, in any (indirect) way, contribute to donald trump's happiness. $150 from here.
there's also the one below, on sale at asos here.
is this too plain? too big?

i recently
had the.most.amazing dessert concoction ever at my sister's house - a "banana whip." it is a frozen banana, all smushed up. doesn't sound the most tempting. but it is OUT of this world. see more details here.

and now i know exactly what my graduation gift to myself is.
a fruit juicer!!!
i have a feeling this might change my life. or, at the very least, my dessert routine.
{this photo - definitely not of a banana whip - reserves my right to always have real ice cream, whenever i feel like it. photo from here.}

last week
i went thrifting with a friend.
now, i consider myself a pretty seasoned thrifter. i've sought out bits and baubles east coast and west, in the u.s. and abroad. this was a delightful hunt - we are both treasure hunters, aware of the subtle differences in each others tastes, combing the racks for items that might attract either of us, relatively knowledgeable of the different brands, fabrics, cuts (she more than i, but that's okay).
as it happened, we both purchased coats. not surprising, if you know our tastes.
i am still daydreaming about one that i acquired. vintage, and in impressive condition, it looks to have been made in the 1930s or '40s. i can't help but imagine the woman who originally owned the coat - the events were she wore the coat, the small possessions that she kept in her pockets.
it's one of the (many) reasons why i love to spend my time in thrift stores. the actual coat is only the smallest part of the find; maybe the true treasure is its life before me.
{excellent words from here}

exactly how
hard is it to find a robe that is:
- short (but not hoochie) - just above the knee is just fine
- all cotton (preferably supima or something else ridiculously soft)
- light gray or soft blue
- not crazy expensive
and NOT
- terry cloth
- velour/velvet
- with ugly ruffles
- rayon/other synthetic material
???
because i am having way too difficult of a time with this...

(this is so ugly i can't even believe i am posting this. but the sad truth is that this is out there. for copyright's sake - NOT so you can buy it, the robe is from here)
